Kubernetes New Contributor Course:

Building Pathways for Open Source Growth

Who is in charge here? We all are!

To continue to thrive and to honor its values of inclusion, the open source behemoth Kubernetes needed to make onboarding easier. That is a lot to ask of a technology that no one would ever describe as easy or light. One of our favorite pastimes is finding new metaphors for what Kubernetes is. Is it a car engine? a boat? an otter (what?)? a tree trunk?

Kubernetes is the standard backbone of all large application deployments today. It is also a proof point of the effectiveness of open source methodologies. With over 3,000 contributors in 2022, a Slack that is constantly bubbling with dialog, and multiple conferences held worldwide, the Kubernetes community is a lively, friendly culture where new contributors and legends of software development interact.

Things are DIfferent Here

New contributors are extremely valuable to an open source project. Lion’s Way was called in to simplify the experience of new contributors from around the world. Along with the New Contributor Course, Lion’s Way audited and updated the entire contributors website.

An open source project is different from a corporate hierarchy. Who is in charge? We all are! Lions approach input and sign off differently for open source communities, joining interest group meetings and Slack channels with a constantly rotating cast of participants.

Lion’s Way believes in the power of Open Source communities and loves to pitch in. We have improved participation, helped explain these wonky bits of code to business decision makers, and eased the documentation process. We believe the open source world will continue to grow and we are excited about helping to overcome the inevitable challenges.
